In order to put an end to age-old traditions of cruelty towards freshwater turtles, Prokriti O Jibon Foundation stopped the Turtle fair of Gopalgonj, Rajpur in 2011 with the help of the local authorities. This two-hundred-year old fair used to be held on the bank of river Andharmanik at Gopalganj where marchenters from Barisal, Bhola and Gopalganj used to sell endangered species of turtles. In this Fair, approximately 8 to 10 lac taka worth turtles used to be sold and killed which included at least 10 different critically endangered species of turtles.
