Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Islam, a prominent academician and wildlife researcher, has been awarded ‘Prokriti O Jibon Foundation-Channel i Nature Conservation Award 2022′ for his outstanding contribution to the betterment of the environment and biodiversity of Bangladesh. Under the renowned ornithologist of India, Dr. Salim Ali, he obtained his PhD degree from the University of Mumbai by researching on birds in 1986 and he got an opportunity to work as a Commonwealth Postdoc Fellow at the Universityof Cambridge, UK in 1992. He is a fellow of the Zoological Society of Bangladesh and the Zoological Society of London. Prof. Dr. Anwarul Islam joined the Dept. of Zoology of the University of Dhaka (DU) as a professor in 1999 and retired in 2020. Presently he is the CEO of the wildlife research organization, WildTeam. He is also the co-founder of WildTeam. Under his supervision, a Knowledge Center in Dhaka and 5 Sundarbans Education Centers in Sundarbans have been established to inspire the young generation in wildlife education. Besides researching birds, Dr. Anwarul Islam was involved in initiating a Bird Fair in the country under the direction of Mr. Enam Ul Haque to raise awareness on bird conservation. He prepared and edited the Red Liston threatened vertebrates, which was published by IUCN Bangladesh in 2003. Dr. Islam has authored over 70 research articles and over 10 books on wildlife and biodiversity. He is also one of the authors of Bangladesh Tiger Action Plan 2009-2017. He was actively involved in the formulation of various policies including the Wildlife Act 2012, Wildlife Farms, Compensation for Wildlife Attacks, National Award for Wildlife Conservation. In his diverse career, he has received several awards and honors in recognition of his work and the Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation in 2011 is the notable among them.
