The independence award 2026

The Independence Award, Bangladesh’s highest civilian honor, was presented in 2026 to recognize individuals and institutions for their exceptional contributions to the nation. Among the recipients, Bir Muktijoddha Muqeed Majumdar Babu, Chairman of Prokriti O Jibon Foundation and Vice Chairman of Impress Group, was honored for his impactful work in environmental conservation.

The award ceremony was held on April 16 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, where the Prime Minister formally handed over the awards to the recipients. Prior to the presentation, the Cabinet Secretary introduced the awardees and highlighted their achievements, underscoring the national importance of their contributions. Muqeed Majumdar Babu’s recognition reflects a growing emphasis on environmental protection as a critical component of national development.

This year’s award is particularly significant as it highlights environmental conservation at the highest level of state recognition. His inclusion among the honorees marks a milestone, signaling increased national awareness and institutional support for sustainability and ecological preservation efforts in Bangladesh.

In total, 15 individuals and 5 institutions received the Independence Award in 2026, covering a wide range of sectors including social service, culture, science, and public welfare. The award, introduced in 1977, remains the most prestigious civilian accolade in the country.

Each recipient is awarded an 18-carat gold medal weighing 50 grams, along with a replica of the medal, a certificate of honor, and a monetary prize. The Independence Award continues to symbolize the রাষ্ট্রীয় (state) recognition of outstanding service, dedication, and long-term impact on the nation’s progress.
